Speaking from experience – Part four Simon Howes
As part of our ‘Speaking from Experience’ blog series, which highlights the journeys and insights of our senior leadership team, we’re turning the spotlight on Simon Howes, Chartered Structural Engineer. Simon shares his path into the profession, what excites him about his work, and the projects and structures that have left a lasting impression.
What was your route into structural engineering?
After leaving school, I went on to study Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Leeds, where I completed my master’s degree. My first role was at a large multi-disciplinary company, which gave me the opportunity to explore different areas including geotechnics, highways, and bridges. It was building structures, though, that really captured my interest and set the direction for my career.
What’s exciting about your career?
There are two sides to this for me. On the design side, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the buildings you’ve worked on come to life. Now that I’ve moved more into management, the excitement comes from working with my team, supporting their development and watching them grow in their own careers.
What’s the most interesting or satisfying project you’ve worked on and why?
The East Building at the University of Suffolk stands out as a career highlight. I was honoured to receive a Structural Excellence Award from the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) for the design work I did on that project. It’s also on my daily commute, so I get to see it regularly, which is a great reminder of what can be achieved with great design.
Have you got a favourite structure that you admire and why?
Definitely the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It’s a brilliant example of structural innovation and historical significance. Designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel, it’s not only technically impressive but also visually iconic. There’s a reason it’s admired around the world.
